Trevor Wentworth, Matt Wentworth, Alex Woodrow, Tim Molloy
Genre: Post-hardcore, Metal
This album changed my life. I am very biased with this review because this was one of the first metal albums I got REALLY into. This entire album is filled with songs that are not only unique, they're catchy, pure metal, super deep lyrical wise, and just overall perfect. This album is one of my favourites, and this band is absolutely top tier for me. Give this one a listen if you're into metal and not afraid of a little screaming.
Thoughts & Feelings?
This album is near perfect. I have had many hours of listening to this album on repeat. This was my first entry into metal that's heavier than gravity.
This album feels like I'm at a rally for all the right reasons, fuck the government and there's no life after death. People are shouting and screaming and I'm there with them, shouting and screaming. We're all a unit and a family together, just rallying together against the man. This album gets me so FUCKING hyped.
There's a lot of screaming in this album, but not the kind of screaming that sounds like gurgling shit. The screaming by Trevor is super good and enjoyable, even for people that don't enjoy stuff this heavy.
Get ready to listen and learn, because this album goes into a LOT of important topics. The lyrics to almost every song are super meaningful, and get ready to head bang. This album is HEAVY and yet STILL groovy as fuck. The lead singers (Yes, PLURAL. SINGERS) are brothers Matt and Trevor Wentworth. They sound VERY similar, and they play SO well off each other. Trevor does all the screaming, and usually Matt takes the softer singing parts while also killing it at guitar. They sound magical.
Smash or Pass?
Fate - SMASH. What a hell of a start. Chorus is groovy as FUCK. The guitar is INSANELY good, I LOVE all the little nuances that pass by. The breakdown is FUCKING NUTS. Head-bang, head-bang, head-bang. I can identify this song in 3 seconds.
Send Me To Hell - SMAAAAASSSSHHHHHHH. This is probably the best song on the album. The guitar is fucking NUTS and super good. Vocals are god tier, the guitar is god tier, the drums are great, bass does it job. The whole vocal section is so god damn groovy that it's so difficult not to scream this song out loud while listening at work. Bridge is wildly good. I can't get over how well Matt plays. He has such a talent to speak with the guitar.
Age of Ignorance - SMASH. The guitar is as per usual sick as hell. This one is super groovy. The message behind the lyrics is SUPER important and is still relevant, even after 11 years. The chorus is super smooth. Bridge is decent, but there are better bridges on this album so tough for this one to stand out. Besides that, this whole song is a banger. The solo is FIRE. Just SO much character into it.
Reason to Love - Smash. This one isn't amazing but it's still a good song. As per usual the guitar is sick. The chorus is SUPER catchy and gets stuck in my head pretty often. There's not much guitar in the verses unfortunately. The bridge / breakdown is SICK as fuck. I love the vocals during this section. THIS is how you do a successful change in a song. AAAAA that fucking slow part before the return to the song is SO fucking good. It's just so unique in such a good way.
Liberate Me - Smash. As per theme, the guitar is fucking INSANE. This one is definitely one of the heaviest on the album, and it's great. Lot of screaming in this one, so if that's not your thing then skip it. The chorus is SUPER fucking catchy though. This chorus gets stuck in my head pretty fucking often. It's just SO clingy. The chorus feels like the eye of the hurricane- the calm inside the storm. Outside is raging, but the chorus inside is grooving. The bridge is also super grooving.
Voices - SMASH. This one starts off slow but in a GOOD way. It needs to start off slow to sound so good. It's honestly one of my favourites on this album just because of how perfect it sounds. Guitar sounds so good as per usual, thank you Matt. The chorus is SO sexy. This entire song is sexy. This one isn't as heavy as the other songs but that's definitely a positive. It's the perfect balance. I wish this song went on a little longer though. It ends too soon.
Conspiracy - Smash. Another absolute heavy banger. I hate to say the same thing over and over but I can't get over how good the guitar sounds. The chorus is super groovy. I absolutely love the guitar solo that sings the chorus. Bridge is nuts to butts insane as usual. These guys crush it with changing the song and making it still sound like it fits in the same song.
Enemy - Smash. Another really heavy song but this one I'm not super into. It's great, don't get me wrong but compared to the rest of the songs on this album it's comparably mid. The chorus is SUPER groovy though. As per theme of course, the bridge is sick but ESPECIALLY this one. I absolutely LOVE the guitar in this section. It's just incomprehensibly good. The solo is insane. Chills.
Invincible - Smash. This song is somewhat forgettable to be honest, but it sounds great still. It's got the same problem as Enemy where it's a good song but compared to the rest of the album it's mid tier. I get a little bored of the chorus until it gets to the bridge section which of course sounds so sick. The breakdown is also absolute fire.
A Sun That Never Sets - SMASH. This song gets me so fucking hyped. This song is such a great balance between absolutely heavy as fuck and groovy as hell. I especially love the lyrics in this song just because they're so relatable to my beliefs. Even besides that this song is so fucking groovy. The entire time I'm jamming. I'M SORRY I JUST DON'T GET IT..Absolute fire. The screaming parts are also absolute fucking bombshells.
Extras
Fate - Acoustic - Smash. Usually I don't review extra songs on albums but these are great and worth talking about. It just shows how talented these boys are at their craft. The acoustic guitar is extremely impressive and the vocals are just spot on, top tier. It's super interesting to see metal songs get turned into these acoustic soft ballads. The piano section is especially chilling.
Reason to Love - Acoustic - Smash. This song is so beautiful, and again- it's so interesting to see acoustic versions of metal songs. This band really knows what it's doing. It's especially interesting to see the heavy screaming part of this song turned so soft.
Skyfall - Smash. If you know Our Last Night, this is probably why. They do a LOT of cover songs of pop songs, this one of course being by Adele. They gained popularity on YouTube with a lot of these covers, and of course that is how I discovered them. This song is GREAT, and well performed by the boys. If you know this band just by their covers alone, you're doing them a great disservice. Their original songs are WAY better than any of their covers. This version of the song is great regardless, however.
Conclusion
If you enjoy sick guitar, this is your album. This album is heavy, full of energy, and will make you feel things that only can be felt by a first love. This album does so many things correct that it's difficult for me to understand why some songs have sections that are so perfectly constructed.
RANK: A+
What are your thoughts? This album was super important to me as a person but maybe you disagree? Let me know what you think!
