Intro
This album is great. It's not nearly as perfect as something like Sam's Town or Hot Fuss, but it has some GREAT moments. This album is definitely worth a check out (especially the medals & smashes), but other than that it's mid.
Thoughts & Feelings?
If you enjoy only punk rock / metal, click away. This is VERY different, but very worth checking out.
This album is great when it's great, but fall asleep when it's not. The songs that don't smack hard are the songs you can EASILY put on in place of ASMR- completely will put you to sleep. The most boring and slowest songs imaginable. Despite that though, some of these songs are super great. I saw the Killers in 2010 when they were touring, and the only played Human and Spaceman- so take what you want from that. They weren't amazing to see live then, I don't know how they are these days.
I like this album a lot. It has a few great songs, but most of the songs are easy listeners. This is a nice album to put on when you're having kind of a tough day and trying to get through it but need to get work done. Check the feelings paragraph below. This album feels very similar to Goldfinger - The Knife, simply because it starts off so strong, and then all of a sudden I'm like what the hell, and I'm listening to the washing machine on rinse cycle.
This song makes me feel like I'm at work, but I put the headphones in and I'm transported to a completely other world where there are guys with radios and computers set up trying to contact aliens. I'm like what the fuck are you guys doing and then my headphones come off and I'm back at my desk at work.
Smash or Pass?
Losing Touch - Smash. This song rocks my cock. You have to know the Killers to be able to get into this track. This isn't going to be your punk rock / metal / ska shit you're usually going crazy for, this is alternative rock and this is a good stepping stone into the pond of Killers. This song and the rest of them are much more pop than punk, and even rock. This song is pretty sick, and the end whispering part especially gets me pretty fucking good.
Human - SMASH. This song you'll recognize immediately. Listen to it and you'll immediately fall in love. This is one of those songs I listen to when I can't get through life and I need a pick-me-up. It's one of those songs you wish you could sing wherever you are, and you just smile the entire time with a bright glow in the eyes. This song gets me so happy and dancy.
Spaceman - MEGA FUCKING SMASH. This song kicks SO MUCH ASS. I am ALWAYS grooving to this song. This song gets everything right. I am jamming hard the entire time and wishing there was more. This is the kind of song that I'm super sad when it's over because it didn't continue on for the rest of eternity to cure my depression. Chorus is a SLAP.
Joy Ride - SMASH. This song is great. It's not the greatest song I've ever heard but I'm grooving as hell listening to this shit. Guitar has a great show up in this song, especially with the accents. This song is just fun to listen to, but I wouldn't put it in my playlist.
A Dustland Fairytale - Smash. You all know me, I'm not one for slow soft songs but this shit is so good. This is the kind of song that makes me want to cry. Slow and groovy, just the perfect fit for this album. It is a solid brick in this album. When this song picks up, it's super enjoyable. I can imagine singing this song in a large empty room while twirling around in circles like some Beauty and the Beast type shit.
This Is Your Life - Smash. This song is pretty decent, the bass is fucking LOUD and that's GREAT- it's catchy and gets stuck in my head but other than that it's pretty mid tier range. I tried looking this song up and couldn't find any info about what the song is about so if you know PLEASE comment. Yeah it's pretty decent, I would never skip this but it's fairly average. Head bobby though.
I Can't Stay - Pass. I really enjoy the bass being so loud. Other than that I can't say many good things about this song. It's pretty generic and boring. Once the 2nd chorus comes in I'm more into it, but I can't justify it being above average. I am grooving though, it's enjoyable but nothing to write home about.
Neon Tiger - Smash. This song is very fun and unique. It's not incredible but it's very enjoyable and singable. I especially enjoy the chorus every time it comes up, that descending tone. This one is just so unique but doesn't have anything that makes it outstanding.
The World We Live In - Smash, but barely. This one is very fun and groovy but you can easily space out and sleep to this one. Honestly listening to this a second time I spaced out hard, I'm enjoying this but it's super generic.
Goodnight, Travel Well - Pass. Is this inception? Don't listen to this song at max volume. This is easily the worst song on the album, I hate it. Skip this one because I'm going to fall asleep. Would you believe me if I told you this song is almost 7 minutes long? Go to bed. Goodnight, travel well.
HONORABLE MENTION - Just Another Girl - I'm including this song because it's ONLY included in their best of album in 2013, and I think that's not fair because why would I review a best of album? Yeah great, this whole album is amazing- like wtf??? So I'm including this song here just because of how important it is. It's INSANE.
Listen to this song. NOW. I'm adding a new ranking just because of this song. PLATINUM. This song helped me through some DARK times in my life, and it's fucking incredible. I will NEVER get enough of this song and I think it's so incredible underrated, it deserves to be listened to.
Conclusion
This is a great album. It is absolutely great, just some of their latter slow songs fall shot of being enjoyable. This isn't the best Killers album I've heard, and you can't really convince me otherwise. It's a good easy listen. Super fun times.
RANK: B+
