Royal Blood - How Did We Get So Dark?
Released June 16, 2017
Mike Kerr, Ben Thatcher
Intro
How did they do it again? They created another masterpiece. Truth be told- this album isn't AS good as their 2014 debut "Royal Blood", but this album still kicks ass. I'll spoil it now, this album is not an S tier, there are some songs I have a grip with- but most of them land on their feet successfully and are VERY enjoyable.
Thoughts & Feelings?
Another typical masterpiece from the 2 boys. This album is so much better than I remember it being when it came out. Probably because I was a young boy, fresh off the first album. This album is definitely a great listen. If you want me to put the first album aside and exclusively talk about this album then that's fine, this album is great. It's not perfect, there are some strikeouts.
What else can I say about this album? Like it's great but not perfect. Check the smash or pass and you'll see what I mean.
As per my feelings tradition- this album makes me feel like I'm in the club at a 70's themed dance party, but they're playing 2000s music. Not that the music feels like it's from the 70's, that's just where I feel like I am at the time.
Smash or Pass?
How Did We Get So Dark - SMASH AS FUCK, this song kicks ass and I can't help but sing the hell out of it every time it comes on. The background singers are a little distracting, but other than that this song is an absolute banger.
Lights Out - SMAAASSHHHH. That SEXY drum fill midway- that shit is so good (2:29). It's iconic for this band. Everything lands, the guitar riffs are amazing as always. SUPER enjoyable.
I Only Lie When I Love You - SMASH. This one is a great one live, the way Mike encourages the crowd to sing, that shit is awesome.
She's Creeping - Pass. Honestly this song just doesn't do it for me. The riff is kinda cool I guess but the chorus just drops me off. I can understand if you enjoy it though.
Look Like You Know - Smash. This song is pretty sick, but not my favourite. Definitely got some groove to it though, and I can listen to it easily when it comes on. Can't help but smile and vibe.
Where Are You Now? - Smash, I guess. This one is fun, but not super iconic or interesting. Falls a little short in my opinion, but I will definitely still listen when it comes on. Good end section.
Don't Tell - Pass. This one is super slow and boring. That's all I can say.
Hook, Line & Sinker - SMAASSHH AS FUUUCCCCKKKKK. This is it, this is the best one, this one is so sick, I fucking love the riffs, I love everything about this one. When this album first came out, this song was on repeat for me for days so much so that I got sick of it. STILL- GREAT SONG, this one is so much different than any others on the album. This song feels like it was supposed to be on the first album.
Hole in Your Heart - Smash. The intro is pretty sick. Other than that it's not amazing. The chorus is very sick. This song feels like the real ending of the album.
Sleep - Smash, I GUESS. Mom can we have Better Strangers? We have Better Strangers at home. The Better Strangers at home:
Conclusion
Royal Blood is here to stay, whether you like it or not. They are coming out with some banging albums, and start enjoying because these boys are on fire. This is a great album, and a great listen. There are some songs that fall short- but that's to be expected. Good album, good live performances. Listen to this, and the first album.
