Intro

This review is going to be VERY similar to the last Goldfinger one, except this album is much different than Never Look Back. Again- DON'T compare this to 90's Goldfinger- this is MODERN Goldfinger. This album is GREAT when it's great, but BAD when it's bad. There are some absolute S tier songs here, but there are also some rich stinkers. It honestly feels like halfway through this album they just gave up and threw anything they wanted. The first half blow the roof off. The second half piss on the ground when everyone's left.

Thoughts & Feelings?

Again- this is NOT 90's Goldfinger. I'm saying this because every single review I've ever read about this album is "This album is a step down from old Goldfinger, have they gotten old and lost their touch?" YES, okay they are old (Am I Deaf), but this album SMACKS me around. Honestly if you want the best experience, listen to half this album and then shut it off. The later half of songs are very... weird and strange (looking at you, Orthodontist Girl... like wtf??? Still makes me laugh though).

This album makes me feel like I'm in an underground punk club, going crazy and moshing and shit but then all of a sudden the cops show up and we're all kicked out, so we're forced to party in the street but we're in the sewers... I guess?

Tough for me to describe the vibe of this album. I can't remember the last time I actually listened to this album all the way through. Tough for me to say how good it is on par with Never Look Back, since every song on that album was so put together and the vibe was perfect. Here, I'm not sure whether to go crazy rocking out or put on my tinfoil hat and hide.

The songs that rock, REALLY fucking rock. But the songs that suck, REALLY fucking suck. That's how I would describe this album. It's either the best shit you've ever heard, or it's the most skippable shit in the world. Honestly just listen to the smash songs and pass on the passes. This album is very forgettable, but is held up by the quality of the absolute S tier banging songs.

Smash or Pass?

A Million Miles - Smash. Guitar sounds fucking incredible on this song. A GREAT opening for this album. The pre-chorus is sick as hell. The chorus is BANGING. Absolutely great fun for how fast and aggressive this one is. HARD smash, this one is incredible.

Get What I Need - FUCKING SMAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. This song keeps me alive I swear to god, this song is one of the greatest songs I've ever heard in my life.Ska punk at it's VERY BEST here. This song does everything right. It's so much fun, and so enjoyable. The horns are top tier and on FULL display here.

Am I Deaf - Smash. Another classic punk rock heavy hitting song. This one is great and super enjoyable. The lyrics are definitely an old man singing, but it just feels like such a fun song you can't help but sing along and enjoy yourself.

Tijuana Sunrise - SMAAAASSSSSHHHHH AS FUUUCCCCCKKKKKK. This song feels like it belongs on Never Look Back, based on how much of a beach vibe it's got going. The music video for this one is super fun as well, highly recommend it. This song is super slow and chill, but that's why it's so great. It's honestly incredible. Cannot recommend a better chill ass song than this S tier smash.

Put The Knife Away - SMASH. The guitar in this song is sick as fuck. Punk rock, smash your face in. This song is gritty and fast and fun. Don't really know what else to say- this song is great. Give it a listen.

Don't Let Me Go - Pass. The beginning of the downfall, here we go. This song is super lame and I have a feeling this is where this album starts to shit the bed. It's a shame cause all the songs above are so fucking insane. This song is so generic and boring.

Beacon - Smash. This song is fun but not incredible. I can be grooving to this song without any issue. This is definitely more punk rock than ska, but that's the vibe this song is going for for sure. It's definitely enjoyable, the chorus is a lot of fun. Guitar riff is kinda neat I guess.

Who's Laughing Now - Pass. This one is super forgettable. It's difficult not to skip this one cause of just how ridiculous it is. It feels like a god damn children's nursery rhyme. The chorus is meh. The only redeeming quality of this one is the very end, it has this cool "this is not the end" part, which is pretty good.

Say It Out Loud - Smass. I really can't decide whether this song is good or not. It's fun, but the amount of times John Feldmann says "say it out loud" really gets on my nerves. I'm gonna re-listen to this song and see how many times he says it. 30 FUCKING TIMES. YIKES.

Orthodontist Girl - Pass. I like the IDEA of this song, but it just sounds like shit. This is a fun concept I guess but it just falls so flat. I think they focus too much on the lyrics (which are super gross), I would prefer a lot more subtlety. I feel so gross listening to this song to be honest.

See You Around - Pass. This song is SUPER forgettable. Fall asleep and don't think too hard about this one. The chorus is the only redeeming part. Also hi Mark Hoppus! Sorry you had to sing a shitty song! Honestly just skip this song.

Liftoff - Smash. This one is pretty fun, not gonna lie. It's not that good though. I like the pre-chorus and the chorus, they're enjoyable. A small glimmer of hope.

Milla - Smash. This one isn't the most enjoyable song, but it's SUPER cute if you know the context (song is about his daughter). Honestly the beginning of this song is super lame but it gets better as it goes on. Super super super super super cute, I'm glad this is the song that ends the album.

Conclusion

This is a weird album for me to be honest. It has really good moments and really bad moments, that's all I can really say to sum this one up. Don't listen to this one all the way through, just the medal songs and a few passes. I was honestly a lot happier listening to Never Look Back, that album definitely takes the edge. This isn't a BAD album, just mid and weird.
