Intro

Green Day released this masterpiece in the year 2000, but everyone must have been so foggy and preoccupied by Y2K that no one notice this platinum album. It was received poorly and did not sell too well. Consider yourself a true fan if you throw this album on pretty frequently, as it has some of Green Day's best work hidden within.

Thoughts & Feelings?

Well here we are boys, girls, and everything else. I am the biggest Green Day fan in the world, so this is review #1 of many. This album is CRITICALLY underrated. I was just 3 years old when this album released, and I hear stories of people at the time telling each other that Green Day was over and done with because of this album. Little did they know- their explosive hit American Idiot was due next up. This album manages to be one of the most creative pieces of art they've ever created. I am so very thankful for this work of art, because it brought some absolute masterpiece songs into existence. Thank you

This album makes me feel like I'm in the middle of the woods and we're throwing a secret party. All of us are gonna get drunk around a huge fire and blast music then pass out in log cabins afterwards.

I can't say enough good things about this album. It's a real shame that it was received so poorly when it released. This album manages to be so creative with the instruments it uses, that it set the stepping stones for incredible albums to come. You all know how much I love Green Day, and this of of course my tattoo album. I am very biased when writing this review just because I've listened to this piece of art hundreds of times, even on vinyl.

This album is a pretty easy listen. As per usual, read smash or pass below to see if this is going to be your kind of strawberry jam. The medal songs especially are critically underrated for how great they are, even if they aren't the most popular.

Smash or Pass?

Warning - Smash. This song is super great, and I love it very much but the guitar isn't very interesting. Just the same sequence over and over again. I do really like the part where the sirens and alarms are going off in the background. This is a great song, but I don't listen to it exclusively very often. Decent intro to the album, but not the brightest.

Blood, Sex and Booze - Smash. This song is a groove for sure. I love how Green Day isn't afraid to tackle any topic. This song is fun and poppy to sing along to, all while having a huge dark undertone about kinky sex. This song is absolutely fun.

Church on Sunday - Smash. Another great hit on our hands here, folks. This song manages to feel like a balance between classic and modern Green Day (exactly where it is), and that doesn't disappoint. This song is so much fun to listen to and sing along to, and the message behind it is really important as well.

Fashion Victim - SMASH. This song is killer on guitar. It's another groovy tune that gets you going. I love everything about this song, it's just a great underrated hit. The riffs are pretty sick in this one.

Castaway - SMASH AS FUCK. This is PURE PUNK ROCK at it's finest. This shit sounds is just your classic Dookie/Insomniac sound. Killer chords and ripping ass. I was obsessed with this song for a while, and I am not surprised. This song is an absolute smash.

Misery - SMASH. This song is one of the reasons why I love this album. This song is the weirdest god damn song I've ever heard, but holy hell is so insanely creative, poetic, musical. This one is very slow and soft but manages to tell so much. I absolutely adore the mandolin (or whatever) solo near the end. This song uses so many instruments that it's just SO fun and so enjoyable. Give this one a listen, but you won't believe it's Green Day.

Deadbeat Holiday - SMASH. The intro to this song is so much fun. Everything about this song is fun punk rock. This one feels much more pop-punkish but in a good way based on how bubbly and fun this is. This song just always put me in a good mood. It's a nice easy listen and sounds great. What's with the Christmas bells?? It's awesome! Where are the other bands that add crazy random instruments to their songs??

Hold On - SMASH. This song is INSANELY good. Very similar to Warning in terms of simple guitar, but it's just so much more of a jammy jam that it's so much fun. This is one of those easy campfire songs you can pull out and start singing and everyone will enjoy. I LOVE the marching bit they do midway through the song.

Jackass - Smash. This song feels very similar to Fashion Victim just with how it's structured and the way the guitar works. This is probably the worst song on the album- but that's saying something considering this song still kicks ass. Classic punk rock feel to it. There's a KICKASS saxophone solo in the middle, like- WHO DOES THAT? It's insane- more of that pls.

Waiting - SMMAAASSHHHH AS FUCKKKKK. This is the best song on the album in my opinion, maybe it's because it's so relatable or because it rocks the hell out of me. The guitar sounds so fucking glorious, everything in this song is perfect. Classic punk rock. If you play guitar, this is one of those songs I highly recommend learning. Super simple and super enjoyable to play.

Minority - SMASH AS FUCK. We all knew this one was coming. This is the big hit off this album and it's clear to see why. It's punk rock, it's fun and gets you moving. The song is just so unique that there's not a lot like it. It manages to sound like a party and kick your face in at the same time.

Macy's Day Parade - The absolute perfect ending to an album. This song manages to make me feel sad, but in an accepting sort of way. The music video is pretty neat- a one take. This song gets pretty stuck in my head often. Guitar is very simple and very similar to Warning & Hold On. If you enjoy slow depressing songs, this is definitely one to check out. I always space out listening to it.

Conclusion

You don't have to love this album, but you have to appreciate it. It's ambitious and fun as hell. I just wish more bands would implement elements that this album started. I love the use of crazy instruments, and I love the absolute change of style and pace of songs here. This album is great, and as per usual check out the medals to see what you think. Leave a comment if you think this album sucks (or doesn't), and yeah! More Green Day to come if you enjoy them.
