Intro
I know very little about Avenged Sevenfold other than the main songs that everyone has heard. Bat Country, Hail to the King, etc. I have never really listened to an album from them before so I'm very fucking excited to listen to this shit. I LOVE the songs I've heard from A7X, so I'm super stoked to listen to this.
Thoughts & Feelings?
Apparently this band has a lot of controversy around politics or something, I don't really give a fuck about that shit right now though. I'm just here to enjoy some good ass music, and let me tell you- this is some good ass fucking music. These are metal songs that are great, groovy, heavy, go crazy, and can't do much wrong. The songs I didn't know going into this album are great and sound as I expected them to sound like.
This album makes me feel like I'm sitting around a campfire in the graveyard, and a shit load of ghosts are taking turns around me telling stories and telling me what they've done in life and everything. It's spooky as fuck but also interesting to hear all these dead dudes talk about their lives. Don't ask me to elaborate further, I won't.
Smash or Pass?
Critical Acclaim - SMASH. This shit goes fucking hard, as to be expected at this point. This is Symphony of Destruction, isn't it? Holy shit stop yelling at me though I'm scared I did something wrong. This honestly has major Megadeth vibes, absolutely fucking LOVE that tbh. The vocals when they get nasally are a little annoying but doesn't ruin the song. This song makes me feel stressed out like anxiety wise, but in a good way. Lotta tension and a lot going on in this song. I LOVE harmonized guitars in this one, that shit is so spooky and great.
Almost Easy - SMMAAAAASSSHHHHHHHHH. I already knew this song going into this album and I fucking LOVE the guitar so fucking much in this god damn fucking song bro THAT SHIT IS SO FUCKING FIRE. Literally one of THE coolest guitar riffs I've ever heard in my life. Absolutely incredible. It'll be hard for me to find a song on this album that I love more than this one. The solo also goes hard as fuck let's go baby hell yoi. Also apparently this song was written by the drummer. Score 1 point for drummers.
Scream - Smash. This shit is spooky as all fuck but I think that's the point. Super unique to hear that guitar in the background. This one feels much more like a rock song than a metal song however, there's just not as many heavy moments yet. I'm not crazy about this song but it's still really great. The solo catches me really off guard though, but it's to be expected for this band. Harmonized guitars are back and lovely to hear.
Afterlife - SMMAAAAAASSSHHHH. This is another one I already knew off this album but holy FUCK. This song goes fucking HARD BABY LET'S GOOOOOOOO. Another one of the coolest riffs I've ever heard in my life, the fucking bass is sick, everything works on this song. This is the grooviest fucking metal song I've ever heard in my life. This song is so fucking cachy, this is like what a non-metal music listener would listen to. That's not a bad thing- it's great. Glad music can reach out to so many, this is just like your perfect standard groovy ass metal song it's great. Not as good as Almost Easy but easily 2nd for me. Holy FUCK that solo goes so god damn hard.
Gunslinger - SMASH, what the fuck is this? This is uncharted territory for me, haven't heard any song after the last one so these songs are new to me. This is an interesting song to start, I really like the country western vibe going on here with this song. Great transition back into the metal part, that shit is awesome. I especially love those harmonics they punch outs. The chorus is pretty catchy as hell, but I just wish it went a littttttle bit heavier. This is more of a hard rock song than metal which is fine. It's still great. I don't know if I like it more than Critical Acclaim, but it's definitely up there because of how unique this song is.
Unbound (The Wild Ride) - Smash. This sounds very similar to the intro to Almost Easy but like a slower version of it. What the FUCK PIANO HOLY SHIT PUT MORE INSTRUMENTS IN METAL SONGS YES. I love that shit. Apparently this is M. Shadows least favourite A7X song ever, but I don't see anything too wrong with it. It just feels like a regular hard rock song to me. I love these little guitar solo fills and the piano going pretty crazy that shit is so neat.
Brompton Cocktail - Smash. This song is groovy as FUCK. ALSO WHAT THE FUCK, VIOLINS??? ADD MORE INSTRUMENTS TO METAL AND PUNK SONGS LET'S GOO. This song is kinda generic after the intro though. I don't really feel much for this one. I don't really know how to feel. I was super excited hearing violin and that epic opening intro but now this entire song is a generic hard rock song again. I'm a little let down but whatever it's still a decent song.
Lost - Smash. Love the harmonized guitar making another appearance today, love to see that. I really like the palm muted descending guitar in this one. Other than that though, this feels like just another generic metal song. I want to see something different with some badass riffs but this song just gets LOST amongst the other songs on this album. What the fuck is with the weird ass autotune on the vocals here? This song almost got a pass from me just because of the vocals.
A Little Piece of Heaven - Pass. What.. the fuck is this? I am very confused about this song. Also why is it so fucking long (that's what she said). This is a STRANGE song, are you sure this is supposed to be on this album? I mean... I know I told you to add more instruments to metal songs but... this isn't exactly a metal song. It feels so disconnected from everything. It feels like the soundtrack to beetlejuice.
Dear God - Pass. What the heck are these last 2 songs? This shit is so slow and depressing. It's a boring and sad end to this album. I appreciate the effort but these last 2 songs are pretty shit compared to the rest of the album. Long ass boring song, sorry.
Conclusion
I was super excited going into this album but ultimately kind of disappointed. Most of the songs that I haven't heard before sound pretty generic. I don't think I'll be listening to this album again unless I have some sort of strange urge to do so, but I appreciate the album nonetheless. It's probably more worth it to just listen to the medal songs cause they slap hard, and move on with life.
RANK: B+
