Intro
Following the Billy Talent train, this album is excellent and as expected for Billy Talent. This is their 3rd and final self-titled album. How does it compare to the last 2 albums, however? These songs don’t rock as hard and as heavy as they would back in the day. Not as much screaming, and not as fast as their early work. Let’s check out how I feel below.
Thoughts & Feelings?
This album makes me feel like I’m at a funeral, but like in a music video. Like- I’m in a music video about a funeral, and everything is black, and rain is everywhere. Like the opening funeral scene from John Wick- this is the vibe I get. Don’t ask me to elaborate further, I will not.
This album is honestly great, but I don’t think it’s as good as the last 2 albums. This is probably the weakest of the 3. This one is much slower than them both, and it’s not as heavy as I would have liked. You all know me, I am super into the fast pace screamy Billy Talent, whereas this is more of their laid-back side.
These songs feel more like rock songs than punk songs (even though they are definitely punk), but if that’s your thing then great. There are only about 2 songs on this album that I think are perfect, and there are definitely some that I completely forget about, especially near the end.
Smash or Pass?
Devil on My Shoulder – SMASH. This song rocks and is a great opening track to this album. The guitar as per usual sounds awesome. This one has an awesome solo that gets stuck in my head pretty often. I also really love the breakdown, that bass section is super sick.
Rusted From the Rain – SMAAASSHHHHH. You probably know this song. This is the big song on the album, and it kicks ass. The droning guitar at the beginning is sick, the chorus is super catchy, everything works. This one also has a great solo that fits perfectly in the song.
Saint Veronika – Smash. The bass is great in this one, and I love the opening guitar section. I think this one just falls a little flat when it comes to the chorus, however. The breakdown peddle point guitar though is FUCKING FIRE. That shit is awesome, I need more of that but faster and heavier please. Thankfully there is a little screamy business in this one, but I don’t think it’s enough to make this song amazing.
Tears Into Wine – SMASH. This song is AWESOME. The chorus is amazing and gets stuck in my head pretty fucking often. This one is super groovy, and it’s funny- I don’t really like the guitar all that much in this one, it’s just the pre-chorus and chorus that really get me going. Funny though, this doesn’t feel like a Billy Talent song. The solo is pretty lame but that’s okay- the breakdown part is great.
White Sparrows – Smash. Honestly this song is pretty forgettable but it’s still a good song. This one is super slow so that’s kind of why I don’t vibe with it that hard. The lyrics go pretty fucking hard though. Super depressing song but it’s still kind of neat I guess.
Pocketful of Dreams – Smash. For some reason this one is a little annoying with the chorus but it’s still a good song. This song just makes me sad for some reason. I don’t really know why but it just does. I’m sad that I’m not listening to Billy Talent 1. Still a good song though. It has some redeeming qualities but still pretty forgettable.
The Dead Can’t Testify – SMAAAAAAASSSSSSHHHHHHHH BAABBYYYYYYY. This is the underrated beauty that I fucking ADORE. I LOVE THIS GOD DAMN SONG. This song is awesome and easily my favourite on this album. The guitar is heavy and jammy. The bass is very present in this one, everything just sounds so ominous. There’s also another instrument in this one- like a mandolin or something I can’t quite tell exactly. I fucking LOVE shit like that. USE MORE INSTRUMENTS IN PUNK SONGS, THAT SHIT IS SO AWESOME. Thank you to this song it’s my favourite even if it’s not the most popular. SCREAMING IS BACK BABY LET’S GO.
Diamond on a Landmine – Smash. This song is pretty good. This one is definitely unique but it also annoys me a little bit to be completely honest. I like the fact that there’s piano in this song, that’s pretty neat. Put more instruments in punk rock songs, come on it’s so easy- do it. I honestly don’t have much to say about this song. It’s pretty decent. I think it goes on a little longer than it needs to, and is a little too repetitive.
Turn Your Back – SMASH. I completely forgot about this song. It’s AWESOME though. This definitely is more upbeat which is great to see. I love the fact that this one is angrier and faster. It has a great message behind it too, we should all be doing a little more to help others. Also pretty fucking jammy, so love that too.
Sudden Movements – Pass. Honestly this is the only song that I don’t really want to listen to. It goes back to that same slow boring rock song vibe that I don’t really like. I forgot about this one, probably because I never listen to this song. If you like this song that’s fine, I just think it’s too boring.
Definition of Destiny – Smash. This one is pretty neat but forgettable. I completely forgot these last 3 songs were on this album- or even existed. This one is kind of a sad ending to this album. It has potential but falls short. I really like that Ben doesn’t sing the chorus, that’s pretty neat. Other than that, not much to speak about really.
Conclusion
Do you like slower songs that are less heavy and screamy? Then this album is for you- it’s definitely Billy Talent, but it just feels lacking of energy. I wish these songs went faster and harder- but that’s just not what you get. There are definitely some good songs on here, but it’s not their best work. What do you guys think? Is this album for you? If so- great! Let me know in the comments below, love y’all.
