Intro

I was bound to explore a Muse album. Muse is a weird weird band, because some of their songs are the most fucking fire pieces of art that have ever graced my ears, and then the other side of them are like... the FUCK is going on? Not in a good way. So yeah I have a feeling there are going to be an equal mix of smash and pass on this album just because of the nature of how Muse is as a band. Anyway let's see what I think about this album. Shoutout to Elise, thanks for reading my mind and picking a Muse album for me.

Thoughts & Feelings?

This album makes me feel like I in the entirety of 2001: A Space Odyssey. The ENTIRE film is this album and Muse in general. Like... ESPECIALLY that wormhole traveling scene where it just goes on for like 20 minutes of random ass fucking colours, that's exactly how I feel about Muse- I am literally inside of THAT scene for fucking ever. Don't ask me to elaborate further.

Muse is a weird band to me because I don't think any of their albums are particularly good. I think they are a great band and have a lot of great songs, but never an S tier album where every single song works. No masterpieces yet, but that's fine- whatever. It's going to be no surprise that Knights of Cydonia is going to be my favourite song on this album, that shit fucking slaps and is probably the most fun I've ever had playing a guitar.

The reason I titled this one holes revealed is because like most of their albums, there are high points and low points.

Honestly however, this album is a lot better than I expected it to be. Yes, there are some holes and not ever song is an absolute masterpiece but this album is a good listen. It's just so fucking pretentious that it's difficult for me to enjoy at some points because I'm like... what the FUCK is going on. I get it, these guys like to experiment just like me during puberty but still- come on. There's a time and a place.

Smash or Pass?

Take a Bow - Smash. Just as expected from Muse, this is literally like the definition of a Muse song. Some weird ass spacy shit. I am very nervous listening to this song because these are the type of songs by Muse that I do not like. I do not like their weird ass spacey flying out in the middle of nowhere eerie songs. Those are like... the fuck am I supposed to enjoy there / here? Anyway yeah. This song is fine I guess considering it's the opening song so it sets up the vibe. Ow my fucking ears.

Starlight - SMASH. Now we're getting into the good stuff. Yeah this is a great song and I've definitely heard it before. It feels SO much more like a pop song from someone like Coldplay but it's fine. It's a good song and enjoyable. I especially love the bass, that shit is nice to hear. This is LITERALLY a coldplay song though. Anyway whatever it's not AMAZING but it's a good song so I can't really complain that much. It's good. Shoutout to the title of this album being sung.

Supermassive Black Hole - Smash. This is a pretty popular song from Muse but I'm not SUPER into it just because it doesn't feel groovy enough. It's like a low tier Royal Blood song. I don't really know how else to say it. Yeah this song is fine and pretty good but it's not amazing. It also must be fucking challenging as hell to sing. Yeah I nailed it, low tier Royal Blood song.

Map of the Problematique - SMASH. Now we're fucking talking baby. I fucking love the guitar in this song. It still has that strange spacey vibe that I can't stand but it's fine here, it's not too bad. This song is very fucking groovy and easily my favourite song of the album so far. If I use my brain correctly, pretty sure Elise is super into this one if I remember. I can see why if she does though, it's a good song. Lotta catchy groove to it.

Soldier's Poem - Pass. This sounds like Elvis Presley. No offense to him but I can't stand songs like that and these. Like yeah it's... fine and all but I just don't want to listen to this song. It feels way too pretentious and I'm just ready to sleep. Thank god it's only 2 minutes.

Invincible - Smash. I don't really know to be honest. This song is just okay. It's the same problem where it's just way too posh. This sounds like a low tier Killers song. The bass section is fucking great to hear, I love that. More cool guitar noises, less... Pearl Jam vocals. The guitar section in this one is VERY fucking cool so that's much appreciated.

Assassin - Smash. More of this kind of guitar shit please this intro is cool as fuck. Yeah this song is pretty fucking cool. Rhythmically it's not 100% but it's VERY cool. Yeah I think this song is a pretty decent banger, but nowhere near as good as Map of the Problematique. Still a good song though.

Exo-Politics - Smash. Another spooky song but it kind of works here in a strange way. Actually this song is a fucking banger. Much better than Assassin, but not as good as Problemo maps. That solo is very fucking appreciated. I like that a lot. Yeah definitely a solid song here I enjoy it mwah mwah.

City of Delusion - Smash. Oh dear I'm fucking scared. Never mind the song got pretty good after that long ass acoustic section. Yeah this is a pretty fucking good song, this album is aging like wine right now. So far these songs are pretty fucking decent. That one underwater section with the guitar is pretty fucking neat. I want that kind of tone. I still think I like Exo-Politics over this one though. OH BABY TRUMPETS LET'S GO. PUT MORE INSTRUMENTS IN PUNK ROCK / METAL / ROCK SONGS.

Hoodoo - Pass. Oh here we go again. Again with being so fucking dramatic for dramatics sake. I can't stand songs like these where Matt just tries way too hard. I want more rock and fast paced crazy action songs. This is not one of them, this is your crying in the rain singing about how your love left you for your cousin Bertrude. FUCK you Burtrude. What was I saying? Oh yeah this song is boring and too much for me. It kind of picks up midway through once the piano comes in so that's much appreciated but other than that I'm not crazy about this song at all.

Knights of Cydonia - SMAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. Easily the best Muse song on this album, by FUCKING FAR. This song kicks and rips my ass so fucking hard. Normally I don't put live performances as the featured video below, but this is literally my favourite performance of a Muse song ever, so yeah go ahead and enjoy that one below. This song is THE MOST FUN SONG TO PLAY ON GUITAR EVER. It's fucking amazing. THIS is the point where space cowboys become enjoyable. Yeah this is the best song by far, and it's not even close. This song is just so fucking fun. I don't even wanna listen to it, I wanna listen to the live version so much more right now. PLEASE go check it out below, it is so fucking amazing and hype. SHOUTOUT TO FUCKING HORNS IN THIS SONG LET'S GO BABY.

Glorious - Smash. I was VERY fucking scared starting out this song, but the piano is amazing, the guitar is amazing. Yeah this song has a pretty decent feel to it. Another song that I think can be appreciated greatly but I wouldn't really actively seek out to listen to this or any song on this album besides the medal songs.

Conclusion

Muse is an odd band. If you like their songs, this album is a great pick for you. There are definitely some underrated gems to be appreciated here, and there are definitely some holes to avoid. This album SOUNDS like Muse. It's spacey and out there and has moments where you just wish Matt Bellamy would shut his fucking trap like holy shit you don't need to try so god damn hard just... whatever- anyway. Love you Matty boi but holy fuck you don't need to be so god damn pretentious all the time. Just sing the fucking songs, anyway whatever. Yeah this is Muse, check out Knights of Cydonia that's easily the best song.

EDIT: RANK: B (Sorry, forgot to rank it. A little late.)
