Billy FUCKING Talent, BABY. It's been a while since I did an album on one of my favourite bands ever, but here we go. This album KICKS FUCKING ASS. This is easily the best album (spoiler alert) since Billy Talent I. This album also features my FAVOURITE Billy Talent song of all time (spoiler alert), and yeah. Anyway what do I think of this album? Are the boys back?? Did they get past their lonely wows to write some badass fucking heavy fast punk songs? You bet your sweet fucking ass they did. Let's go.
Thoughts & Feelings?
This album really fucking does it for me. I wasn't a HUGE fan of Billy Talent III so it's fucking refreshing to listen to an album that does nearly everything correctly. Sure this album isn't perfect, there are some songs that could definitely be better but this shit is amazing.
This album makes me feel like I'm being pushed around. Like I'm in a circle of kids at the playground (I am also a kid in this hypothetical scenario- just saying- it's not weird), and all the kids are just pushing me around and I just keep going and going and going. Like I'm getting fucking dizzy and shit cause I'm just getting shoved everywhere. Anyway I don't fucking know man, don't ask me to elaborate further.
Also shoutout to Ken Taylor for THE COOLEST album artwork ever. Holy fuck that shit is awesome, great job Kenny boi.
Smash or Pass?
Lonely Road to Absolution - SMASH. The... PERFECT opening to an album. This song sets the perfect tone of the album. It's almost like an album preview, not necessarily a full song just like a little sneak peak intro song. It's perfect though. It also leads PERFECTLY into my favourite song of all fucking Billy Talent time, so that's great. The way it builds up tension for the next song is the PERFECT pairing wine. Here we FUCKING GO, BABY.
Viking Death March - SMMMAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. EASILY THE BEST FUCKING BILLY TALENT SONG TO EVER EXIST. THIS SHIT IS FUCKING PERFECT. EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS SONG IS FUCKING PERFECT. LISTEN TO THIS FUCKING SONG RIGHT NOW, ESPECIALLY THE MUSIC VIDEO, YOU WILL GET FUCKING CHILLS YOU CHEAP BASTARDS. LET'S FUCKING GO BABY. THIS IS BILLY TALENT, THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I WANT. FUCKING BADASS RIFFS, HEAVY FUCKING SHIT, EVERYTHING IS PERFECT. THE BREAKDOWN IS FUCKING INCREDIBLE, IT HAS SO MANY GOOD MOMENTS IN THIS FUCKING SONG. THIS IS EASILY THE BEST SONG EVER. IT'S SO FUCKING FUN TO SING THIS GOD DAMN SONG. EASY GOLD MEDAL, THIS IS EASILY MY PLATINUM MEDAL FOR BILLY TALENT. THIS IS THE BEST SONG THEY'VE EVER FUCKING MADE BABY THIS SHIT IS INSANE.
Surprise Surprise - SMMMMAAAAASSHHHH. I fucking LOVE this song and I also love this fucking music video. This music video is so fucking weird and hilarious so give it a listen. This is a GREAT fucking song. SUPER SUPER catchy, SUPER SUPER groovy. We've come a long way since the 3rd album, this song could easily be the gold medal on that last album. Yeah this song is so fucking groovy. I love what they do with the chorus. This song is INCREDIBLE. That fucking SOLO too holy fuck that shit is AWESOME. "Our generation is a FUCKING JOKE" HOLY FUCK I DIE AT THAT LINE IT'S SO GOOD.
Runnin' Across the Tracks - SMASH. This is a great song. Obviously nowhere near as good as Viking Death March and Surprise Surprise but it's great. I LOVE that this album is heavier than III, cause holy fuck that album was slow and moody, this album is like FUCK YOU, I'm gonna kick you in the head. The pre-chorus on this song is especially enjoyable to listen to. I fucking love this song. That FUCKING line during the breakdown holy fuck. This song is so great.
Love Was Still Around - SMMAAASSSHHH. This song is SO FUCKING GROOVY. The fucking GUITAR bro. Also the line "Got so quiet that you'd hear a PIN drop", holy FUCK. This song has SO many fucking good lyrics in it. Absolutely insane how good this song and this album is. This song is so easy to enjoy it's just easy to vibe and chill out to. Holy FUCK THIS FUCKING SOLO TOO GOD DAMN.
Stand up and Run - SMASH. You all know I'm not one for slow sappy songs but this song is just SO fucking good. This is like the least heavy song on this album and it's just so nice. This song does exactly what it needs to do. Be kinda slow and mellow without be boring. This song is just so enjoyable. Can you believe this is a low point for this album? Crazy- cause this album is fucking nuts. Anyway yeah this is your typical girly song that is easy to enjoy. Sorry girls, no offense at all to you- I KNOW there are those of you out there that enjoy your heavy ass fucking crazy metal and shit but come on like, a lot of girls would listen to this song and enjoy it. I don't really know what I'm trying to say. I've dated girls that tell me the music I listen to is too heavy and then they go listen to like... What's that one band that sings Sex on Fire? Kings of Leon? Yeah anyway fuck that- anyway sorry sorry for the rant. This is a song that all of my exes would enjoy- that's what I'm trying to say. It's an easy easy listen that is enjoyable and cookie cutter. There ya go, do what you want with that information.
Crooked Minds - SMMMAAAASSSHHHH. OKAY BACK ON TRACK NOW. This song is SO FUCKING OMINOUS, AND IT'S GREAT. I feel like such a sussy baka listening to this song. It's almost creepy but then it goes FUCKING NUUUUUTTTTTSSS. Let's GOOO. This song is AMAZING. The PERFECT amount of groovyness and heavyness. This fucking SHIT is SO GOOD BRO. I absolutely LOVE that guitar line. The pre-chorus always gets stuck in my fucking head. The guitar tone is so great in this fucking song.
Man Alive! - SMMAAAAASSSHHHH. HOLY FUCK THIS SONG IS SO GROOVY AND HEAVY AT THE FUCKING SAME TIME AMSDFAGADFGSFD. This FUCKING SONG IS SO FUCKING UNDERRATED. THIS SHIT IS AMAZING. Absolutely FUCKING great. The FUCKING VERSES IN THIS SONG HOLY FUCK THAT SHIT IS LIKE... HEAVY AS FUCK WITHOUT SCREAMING. It's so surprising how fucking great this song is, I don't remember this song being THIS GOOD. It's SO HEAVY.AND JAMMY. AMAZING.
Hanging by a Thread - SMASH. I'm not crazy into this song. It's GREAT, but I'm not the biggest fan of it just because there are better songs on this album. I think it's the vocals that I'm not super into. I mean whatever man this is a GREAT song so what can I say? I just wouldn't put it in my playlist. Let's go back to Man Alive please. Once the song actually gets going, it's pretty fucking enjoyable.
Cure for the Enemy - SMMMAAAASSHHH. There we fucking go we're back at it baby. This is a slow but heavy ass fucking song. Another absolutely underrated gem. This one is super enjoyable, ESPECIALLY the chorus- that shit goes SO FUCKING HARD. I have never sung this song before but I imagine it's probably very fucking fun to sing. Also that ending part is AMAZING, I can't remember if it's the breakdown or not where it starts- I'm getting ahead of myself cause I'm excited to hear this song. THE BREEEAAKKKDOOOOWWWNNN BAABBYYYYY HOLY FUCK THAT SHIT GOES SO HARD. Crazy how good Billy Talent are at making good fucking songs. This shit is so great.
Don't Count on the Wicked - SMASH. Another song I'm not SUPER into but it's a great song regardless. It does everything it needs to do. Yeah this song is fine enough but I wouldn't put it in my playlist. It's SUPER enjoyable to listen to but not unique enough for me to point out specifics that I'm crazy into. Anyway yeah good song, would smash.
Show Me the Way - SMASH. This is another crowd pleaser song. I'm not crazy into it, but it's a great song. It's not very heavy it's just a casual rock and roll jam. I vibe with it but it's exactly like Don't Count on the Wicked where I don't have anything outstanding to point out.
Swallowed up by the Ocean - SMMMMMAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. Holy FUCK this song I forgot this is on the album. CHILLS, LISTENING TO THIS FUCKING SONG. THAT FUCKING GOD DAMN PIANO IS JUST SO... FUCKING HEART KILLING. It's fucking great. This song goes on for forever but I don't care. I'm just here for the sad sappy ride. This is just such a unique song, this is what the last two needed. This song is fucking incredible. Yeah this is easily my 3rd favourite song on this album. It's so good to listen to.
Dead Silence - SMASH. UNFUCKINGFORTUNATELY the last song of the album. This song is AMAZING, and I am so sad that the end of this album is here because this has gotta be my favourite Billy Talent album. It's just amazing. I absolutely love how the title track is at the very end, that shit you don't see very often anymore. Pretty fucking good broskies. This song is amazing, it's a great listen.
Conclusion
Easily my favourite Billy Talent album. This album misses only a couple times, and the rest are straight fucking bangers. Absolute masterpiece of an album. If you have never heard Billy Talent before, this is a great album to go with. I highly recommend it, and there are some absolute masterpiece songs on here. This album is super fun front to back. No skippable songs. It's a perfect mix between heavy, groovy, and rocky. Shoutout to you, Mr. Stallone. Anyway yeah, give this fucking album a listen cause it's great.
