Genre: Punk Rock
Intro
I'm grumpy today. I feel like a grumpy ass teenager having to get up for school on Monday morning so I thought what better album to review than a bunch of angsty teenagers yelling about shit. This album is a compilation album of the first 2 EP's, and the bands actual debut album 39/Smooth. Naturally we as Green Day fans call this the actual first debut album of Green Day. Let's get into it because this is punk rock to the fucking core baby.
Thoughts & Feelings?
This album makes me feel like I'm lying in my bed in my room as a kid, probably like 11 or 12 years old just complaining about my life being so hard and all, and yet I haven't even gotten to the real world yet. Just fucking complaining about my problems and whatever.
I have a lot of fond memories of listening to this album. For those of you that know, I went into exploring everything Green Day had to offer in 2016. This was one of those albums that I listened to pretty frequently. Especially upon listening to one of the live album where Billie Joe songs Going to Pasalacqua, that was probably my first taste of this album and I fell in love. I definitely feel in my element right now listening to these songs. I can close my eyes and go back to those days of exploring Green Day.
Also shoutout to John Kiffmeyer, he was the original drummer for Green Day. Crazy that Tre isn't on this album. That shit is fucking wild to me. I definitely prefer Tre drums though. He goes fucking hard. John does his job correctly and everything, but I just don't think he had the magic to be able to complete the puzzle piece of perfect guitar, perfect bass, and finally perfect drums.
Also shoutout to Mike who was fucking banging on the first album. Without bass on this album, it would be nowhere near the quality that it is. The guitar is SO unprocessed and without any depth, so the fact that Mike slaps bass so fucking hard on this album definitely contributed to it's overall amazing sound.
Smash or Pass?
At the Library - SMMMAAAAASSSHHHHHHH. This is a perfect punk rock song. It just has everything you fucking want. Heavy palm muting shit, harmonics and whatever, that's fucking sick. Bilile Joe's lyrics are VERY good, it's crazy to hear his voice today because it sounds very fucking similar to how it still sounds today. He has aged amazingly. This is a great opening song and it's exactly what you want from your standard punk rock song.
Don't Leave Me - SMMMAAAAAAAAASSSSSHHHHHHHHHH. I fucking love this song, and probably more than At the Library. This song is so fucking catchy. This song is actually heavy as fuck when you break it down. The chorus of this song also gets fucking stuck in my head all the time. The guitar sounds so fucking raw too, that shit is so good.
I Was There - SMMMMMAAAAAAASSSSHHHH. Another absolute banger. Every part of this song gets stuck in my head pretty fucking often. The fucking second section of this song is also an absolute fucking slap. I think that's the bridge section and it's fucking awesome.
Disappearing Boy - SMAAASSHHH. This is a great song. I'm noticing that Green Day in these early days use a lot of open chords as opposed to power chords. I think it's a really neat sound that adds a lot of those strings you wouldn't normally hear out of a guitar. I think that's pretty cool. The bridge section is quite enjoyable, I like the ringing guitar and bass a lot. I love the way it transitions back into the song too, that's awesome.
Green Day - SMASH. What can I say lmao. The only self titled Green Day song that tells you exactly why the band is named Green Day. I'm not super in love with this song, but it gets a good laugh out of me once in a while and I just can't help but smile at the roots of the band.
Going to Pasalacqua - SMMMMMMAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHH. One of the best songs on this album. HERE WE GO AGAIN, fucking SMASH baby. Absolutely amazing. This a perfect punk rock song. Everything rocks. I have good memories of this song. Everything on this song works so well for me. This song is also fun as FUCK to play on guitar so try that out if you have the opportunity to. Such an amazing song.
16 - SMMAAASSHHH. I don't listen to this one very frequently but holy fuck is this a good song. I could absolutely understand if you didn't like this song, it has a little offputting vibe to it but I think it sounds great. I would happily listen to this over and over again. This is just pure punk rock.
Road to Acceptance - SMMMMAAAAAAAASSSSSHHHHHHHHH. This fucking song ROCKS. This is a super underrated track that I fucking LOVE. The bass sounds great on this one (no surprise), and I fucking ADORE the pre-chorus. That shit gets stuck in my fucking head. Plus the chorus is fucking awesome as well, so that helps. The fucking bridge with the bass going and Billie Joe singing higher / whinier and then transitioning back into his usual punk rock voice and the pick slide HOLY FUCK THAT SHIT CURES ME OF ALL FUCKING BAD VIBES, that shit is MWAH. SO GOOD.
Rest - SMASH. This is easily the worst song on this album. It's still a decent song though. It's like a slow droning song that makes me feel like I'm fucking spaced out flying in the sky or some shit like that. Yeah I'm not really into this song but that's okay. I can still enjoy it.
The Judge's Daughter - SMMMMMAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSHHHHHHHHH. WHAT A GREAT FUCKING SONG. This is a great fucking song. This honestly feels like SUCH an angsty teen song about girls, it's fucking hilarious. So good though holy hell, this one is super catchy and the lyrics are especially catchy and funny. "Can we find a way? So that you can stay? I think I'm gonna pop." Holy FUCK that shit is so fucking good. Also KICKASS solo in this song, holy fucking shit Billie Joe can rip it if he wants to, he just chooses not to.
Paper Lanterns - SMMMMMMMMMMAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. THIS MIGHT BE MY FAVOURITE SONG ON THIS ALBUM, IT'S REALLY HARD TO TELL. This is SUCH a great fucking song. Never mind it's over, this is easily the best song on the album. The guitar is wildly kickass, the fucking song is so god damn catchy and everything sounds SO complete. I just fucking love this song, I don't know 100% if it's going to be a gold medal song but holy fuck it definitely deserves one at least, this song is so fucking good. Another kickass solo that Billie Joe just rips. People can criticize Billie Joe's guitar playing, but just look at these old albums and see that he can fucking play. Anyway yeah, S tier punk rock song.
Why Do You Want Him? - SMMAASSHHH. Great song. Hard to follow Paper Lanterns, but this song is pretty good. I don't really have anything to complain about here, it's just an overall good song and that's all I can say. The only thing is the chorus is a little too repetitive. I definitely really like the bridge section, that shit slaps.
409 in Your Coffeemaker - SMMAAAAASSSHHHHHH. This is a great song, as per typical for this album. This ending section is where I forget about these songs. Nice to hear Mike Dirnt on the background vocals. I think he's a super underrated vocalist. He has a few songs that are B sides to random albums that Mike sings and holy fuck are they NUTS. I can't remember the name of it but whatever, go check out that song if you wanna hear Mike Dirnt singing. Governator, that's the one. Anyway back to this song. The ending guitar section is fucking great. Moving on.
Knowledge - SMMMMMMMMAAAAAAAAASSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHH. SHOUTOUT TO OPERATION IVY BABY, HOLY FUCK. This song is so FUCKING good. Green Day does such a great job with this cover. ALL I KNOW IS THAT I DON'T KNOW. I need that as a fucking tattoo dude, that's fucking sick. What a great line, shoutout to you Jesse Michaels. Anyway yeah this is a big highlight for the album just because it's a sick ass cover.
1000 Hours - SMMMMMAAAASSSHHHHHHHH. What an absolute classic song. This song is great. I don't really have much to say about this song that I haven't already said about all the last songs. There are SO many open strings in this song, holy fuck I hear so many god damn sounds lmao. Anyway yeah, great punk rock song you know the drill.
Dry Ice - SMMMMMAAAAAASSSHHHHHHHH. This is a great song but holy fuck the vocals kind of get on my nerves. I don't know what it is but I think it's just too cheesy or something. Anyway yeah despite that this is a fucking amazing song. The bridge section I really enjoy, that's nice to have in here.
Only of You - SMMMAAAAAASSSHHHHHH. What a great fucking song. I fucking LOVE the guitar in this one, that fucking chord progression is so simple but so fucking good. This is one of the most hidden songs ever, I don't think I've ever heard ANYONE talk about this song before. I think it's pretty great. I wouldn't give it any medals or anything but it's just overall a great song. Another KICKASS solo, fucking love to hear it. Amazing.
The One I Want - SMMMMMAAAAAASSHHHHHHHHHH. These last few songs have been pretty similar but are still great. Another just standard good punk rock song, though the chorus kind of irks me the wrong way for some reason.
I Want to Be Alone - SMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH EASILY MY FAVOURITE FUCKING SONG ON THIS ALBUM HOLY FUCK I JUST WANT TO LISTEN TO TIHS SONG ON FUCKING REPEAT. SAVE THE BEST FOR LAST BABY. HOLY FUCK WHAT AN OPENING INTRO RIFF, THAT SHIT IS FUCKING NUTS, PLUS HOLY FUCK CAN I RELATE TO THIS SONG, EVERYONE LEAVE ME THE FUCK ALONE I WANNA BE ALONE. Holy FUCK this song is absolutely incredible. I listen to this song VERY fucking frequently because it's honestly one of my favourite Green Day songs ever it's just so perfect. It sounds SO fucking good, holy FUCK. I LOCK MYSELF INSIDE MY ROOM. IIIIIIII WANNNNAAA BEEE ALLLOOOOOONNNNEEEEEE. HOLY FUCK. This song is just ABSOLUTELY perfect. Everything about it is perfect.
Conclusion
This is how Green Day started. Can you believe that this is the same band that wrote Dookie, American Idiot, Revolution Radio? The stepping stones are there and plain to see. They have had such an amazing career and to think that this is how it started is incredible. I think that Billie Joe would still be just as happy if he was still playing shit like this in local punk clubs and shit. Anyway yeah this album is completely raw but it's just amazing to me. This is a great album to me and I can't really give it much shit. MWAH.
