Mark Hoppus, Tom DeLonge, Travis Barker
Genre: Pop-punk / Punk rock
Intro
Now I'll be honest, I have not gone too deep into Blink 182. I love their mainstream songs but I have never actually gone exploring their albums before- big mistake on my part. My bad guys, I'm sorry- especially considering I own this album on CD (red cross and all). Anyways, yeah this band is great and I love them- but I've never actually listened to this album or any of their other albums- just the top hits. What do I think of this legendary collective of songs? Let's find out together.
Thoughts & Feelings?
This album makes me feel like I'm in that one music video of Simple Plan, I'm Just a Kid. I can literally tell this sounds exactly like one of those classic teen school movies like Freaky Friday or some shit like that. Classic teen high school drama film. That kind of vibe. Hilarious. I don't know many don't ask me to elaborate further.
Can you believe this is my first Blink album review on the site? I can, because they are a band I don't do much exploring of. I really should because I like them a lot, I just don't like when they sound too pop punk rather than punk rock. I like when they kind of go crazy and punk rock similar to the Green Day style rather than the Simple Plan / Good Charlotte vibe.
Smash or Pass?
Dumpweed - SMMAAAAASSSHHHHH. I might have lied, I think I have heard this album before. All the memories are coming back to me. This song is a great fucking opening track. It's the perfect balance of being punk rock but not quite pop punk, which is nice to hear. The vocals are a bit shit but that's kind of the point of punk rock, so no marks deducted for that. The guitar is pretty sick to hear honestly with this mix of chicky chicky palm mutes and stinger licks. Great fucking song though. Much love.
Don't Leave Me - SMMMMAAAAASSSHHHHHH. Hell fucking yeah, this song is sick. Shoutout to Green Day, I prefer their version but that's okay. This song is great and it's legit that classic Blink sound. This song is fast, catchy, everything about it is pretty enjoyable. I can imagine this song would be fun to play on guitar, it gives me St. Jimmy vibes with how fast the guitar is going and switching chords.
Aliens Exist - SMASH. Shoutout to you E.T., fucking hate that little bastard and his stupid ass M&M's. There goes my sponsorship, oh fucking well. I lied in the intro, I have 100% heard every song so far. Probably I did a little exploring and forgot about it. Anyway yeah I'm not too crazy about this song. It sounds great it's just a little annoying and on the nose for me.
Going Away To College - SMMMMMMMMMAAAAAAAASSSSSSHHHHHHHH. I fucking love this song. The guitar is just SO good in this fucking song. This song honestly must be so fucking fun to play on guitar, it just sounds like an absolute blast and gets so much attention that I never had as a kid, thanks mom. Anyway yeah this song is fucking awesome. It honestly sounds like it's from the early 2000s, so I'd say this song was ahead of it's time for sure. It sounds incredible and is easily enjoyable by all audiences, regardless of genre you enjoy. Yes, it's a little mainstream of course but it sounds great.
What's My Age Again? - SMMMMMAAAAASSSHHHHH. This song is of course amazing but holy fuck have I heard it 10 million times. Especially a few years ago when I turned 23, everyone would play this song around me. Not a huge deal but like, yeah you know this song. Everyone on earth knows this fucking song. It's a good song but at this point I've heard it too many times. Still a banger though. Really enjoy the transition from the last song, that's great to hear.
Dysentery Gary - SMMMMMAAAAAAAAASSSSHHHHHHHH. Holy fucking ripping guitar to start this fucking song. This song sounds fucking great. I absolutely love this fucking song it sounds great. I just don't like Toms vocals very much. It's okay but it's a little too weasel voice for me. Whatever anyway yeah this song is fucking great it is probably super underrated honestly. I really like Marks short vocal line, that shit is sick.
Adam's Song - SMASH. Of course this is a classic too, but honestly I'm not super into it. Yeah it's a great song but I'm not crazy into Mark vocals here. It's also kind of boring. This is one of those songs that I can imagine playing on guitar would be kind of boring and a little annoying. I have a couple of those songs from Green Day that I'm not crazy about playing since they don't go hard and crazy like I like. Anyway yeah this is a good song and I can understand if this is a favourite from you but for me, it's just a good song and I'll leave it at that. No playlist needed.
All The Small Things - SMMMMAAAAAASSSSSHHHHHH of course you knew this was going to be a smash. I'd argue this is my favourite out of all the mainstream songs here, just cause this is such a fucking banger. The music video goes so fucking hard for this song, so if you haven't seen it, please do. It's basically like a big middle finger to every other band / artist / group of the 90s. It's fucking hilarious. This one is probably going to get the gold from me just cause it's one of those songs that I haven't ever gotten tired of- unlike What's My Age Again?, so yeah. "Late night. Come home. Work sucks. I know." Holy fuck that shit is literally... life. Everyone always references that shit. Anyway yeah big boi points on this song.
The Party Song - Smash. The fuck is this? This sounds like shit. I love it. This song started off really rough but I came around to really enjoy this fucking song. It's absolutely off the walls batshit crazy but I'm all for it. The lyrics are fucking nuts but whatever it's great.
Mutt - SMASH. It's getting difficult for me to think about what I think about these songs because they're starting to sound very similar to each other. This song sounds like every song before. Whatever it's a great song and I can't say anything negative. This is a great song and I would happily listen to this in my free time or outside of the album. It's a great song.
Wendy Clear - SMAASSHH. I really enjoy this one- I think I just prefer Mark vocals over Tom. No surprise to me. This song is definitely fast and punk sounding I just wish it went a little heavier. This song sounds very similar to Dumpweed to me. It kind of follows the same path. Palm muted chords / notes then your let it rip stinger lick. It sounds great though. Good song.
Anthem - SMMMMAAAAAASSSSHHHHHHHH. This song is fucking great. What a good song to end off the album. I think it's fucking great. I surprisingly like this one a lot more than the other songs on this album that I don't know too well. This song is great but I already put the medal songs out there and I'm not willing to switch it because I think I like Dumpweed and Gary better. Anyway yeah this song goes fucking hard. Mwah mwah.
Conclusion
Typically at this conclusion for an album I kind of didn't know much about but knew the band / songs I would say "I'm really surprised at what I heard"- well I am absolutely the opposite in this case. I am not surprised at all by what I heard. All these songs sound great, they're just your standard Blink 182 pop punk rock songs. I would even argue there's VERY little actual punk rock in here, it's nearly 100% pop punk. That's fine it's a great album and I think highly of it- I just think it's a little too much pop for my liking. Still it's a great album and I can't say anything negative about this album because it's legendary. Mwah mwah.
