Pre-Intro
Hi hi, Sharky here! Thank you so much to my good friend Elise for writing this stellar review. Absolutely smashing. Take it away Elise.
Intro
A warm welcome to the 3 people that will read my shitey review. Gavan has unwisely handed one of the most iconic rock albums to a smelly Brit. I'll do my best.
This album is inspired by a road trip through the places in the US where nobody lives and nothing happens, and the radio stations that are found there. Dave Grohl makes an amazing appearance on the drums for this album. Some of the radio samples they drop in make me laugh too.
Thoughts And Feelings?
I'm still not sure what I'm supposed to put in this section. Overall I think the album is very hit&miss, songs are either godlike or godawful, but it has a good atmosphere with some
funny tongue in cheek social commentary to boot. It's good. I am confused by the sperm on the back of the CD.
Smash or Pass?
You think I ain't worth a dollar, but I feel like a millionaire - The screaming sounds interesting for about 10 seconds before it gets a bit stale. Nice riff though. Clone Radio, LA's Infinite Repeat. We play the songs that sound more like everyone else... than anyone else!
No one knows - Smash. The classic. It's their top song for a reason. We all love this one. I feel like the bassist needs a shower because that riff is DIRTYYY 9/10
First it giveth - SMASSSHHHHH. This may be a controversial opinion but this is my favourite song on the album. I will not elaborate. 10/10
A song for the Dead - Pass. This song starts out really promising with a relentless guitar riff and impressive drumming but it ends up sounding like a PMQ- They just make weird moaning noises. The solo is just awful. Also WHY is this song nearly SIX MINUTES LONG?
The sky is fallin' - Smash. This song is really atmospheric. I feel like I'm tuned to a shitty Bible Belt radio station and someone is preaching to me about the End of Days. Maybe the bass riff could have beena bit more inventive, but this is stoner rock, what did I expect? Nice solo. I think I hear inspiration from Spanish/Central American Folk music in it.
Six Shooter - Hard pass. Jesus Christ, this is just awful. Who wrote this? 0/10
Hangin' Tree - Smash. I wouldn't say this is a Good Song by QOTSA standards, but it's decent and it fits really well in the album.
Go With The Flow - SMASSSHHHH. This song is also one of their most famous and for good reason. It's brilliant. Dave Grohl's drums are great throughout the album but I think he really shines here. The riffs are never boring, and I love the call-and-response of the vocals. Instantly catchy. 10/10
Gonna Leave You - Smash. I like this one. It gives us everything we expect from QOTSA. Interesting lyrics. Beginning of the Filler Section of the album. 7/10
Do it Again - Smash. *smacks roof of car* this bad boy can fit so many fun riffs in it.
God is in the Radio - Smash. This is another song that's just Alright. That's okay. From about halfway through the song it's just one long solo which is really cool and imo better than the first half.
Another Love Song - Smash. Nice riff although Josh is singing like he's auditioning for an Oasis cover band.
A song for the deaf - Smash. This song marks the end of the Filler Section. Interesting sound. I have to be in the mood to enjoy this one. Depending on the day the riff is either really fucking annoying or cool sounding. Not sure why there is a small section of Feel Good Hit of The Summer at the end of this song on the CD version with some maniacal laughing. 6/10
Mosquito Song - S M A S H. I LOVE THIS SONG. It's probably heresy to think that this is in the top 3 songs of the album but I think it's great. I'm going to be pretentious for a minute here. Please excuse me. *puts on pretentious hat* ahem. This song, out of all of them, really captures that feeling of being in the middle of nowhere by yourself. It's a nice slow burn that starts off as a nice walk in the park and builds up to a 'oh fuck, I'm in danger out here.' The instrumental section towards the end has some more of that classical guitar we heard a bit of earlier in the album. I feel like i'm in an old western film. *removes pretentious hat* 10/10.
The Lost Art of Keeping A Secret (Live at the Troubadour) - Smash. The studio version of this song is one of my favourites of the band and the live version only makes me want to go and see them more. 8/10
Everybody's Gonna Be Happy - Pass. Uhhh. No thank you.
Conclusion
8/10
